insights from the National UDIA Conference

Last week, Melbourne played host to the prestigious National UDIA Conference, where industry giants converged to discuss the future of urban development in Australia. Among the attendees was Travis Barnes proudly representing our mission as an alliance for developers, dedicated to providing embedded energy solutions for a brighter tomorrow.

The conference buzzed with discussions and insights, painting a vivid picture of the challenges and opportunities facing the nation's housing market. Amidst nationwide pressure, it became evident that the government is actively being lobbied to address the pressing need for change. One resounding message echoed through the halls: home building must shift towards high density, with Build-to-Rent (BTR) and government-subsidized projects emerging as potential game-changers.

Despite ambitious targets like 1.2 million homes, the reality of housing starts falling short and approvals dwindling underscored the urgency of the situation. However, amidst the challenges, there emerged a glimmer of hope. The government's willingness to partner with developers to expedite approvals signalled a promising path forward. Movement against NIMBYism and the rise of YIMBYs showcased a cultural shift towards embracing development for a brighter future.

One key theme reverberated throughout the conference: the importance of being good ancestors. Developers were urged to shift from regulation to inspiration, learning from international models like Toronto and embracing the legacy of their decisions.

At Altogether, we left the conference feeling invigorated and inspired. Alongside industry leaders, we are confident in our ability to make a meaningful impact on the housing market. The BTR projects we toured left a lasting impression, showcasing innovative approaches to urban living, some with  elements of heritage seamlessly woven into modern design.

But our commitment doesn't end with inspiration; it extends to action. We stand ready to assist developers in overcoming their challenges and realizing their visions. With our embedded energy networks, we offer a solution that drives cost savings and sustainability. By enabling developers and communities to access utilities in bulk at discounted rates, we alleviate pain points such as delivering on time, on budget, and with the least amount of capital expenditure. Moreover, our solutions enhance the sale proposition of developments, ticking the green star and future-proofing them for generations to come.

As we reflect on our attendance at the National UDIA Conference, we are more determined than ever to be catalysts for positive change in the urban development landscape. Together, let's pave the way for a brighter, more sustainable future.
