The energy industry is an exciting place to be right now - just ask Travis Barnes. A natural gun at sales with a get-it-done attitude, Travis is all about innovation, growth, and getting the best outcomes for our customers. Our Senior Energy Consultant says the support and transparency that sit at the centre of our customer value proposition are why he joined - and they’re why he’s stayed.
At 3am on a still winter morning, Travis’s alarm breaks the silence. In his hybrid schedule, he doesn’t have a regular commute, but he’s got a long road ahead of him. By tonight, he will have driven a total of 380km, caught a 1.5-hour flight to central Queensland (and back again), and trudged out in the rain - all to complete a meter read to onboard a new client before their deadline.
“Not every day is like that!” Travis clarifies with a laugh. “Every now and then, it’s just a bit of a rush. I like the freedom in this role - it’s not a typical 9 to 5 in the office. We prioritise getting things done when you can, as long as you’re achieving results. So, as long as you have that personal drive and responsibility, you’ll love it here.”
As a Senior Energy Consultant, Travis provides solutions to property developers and body corporates that add value to their buildings. He achieves this through a range of tech integration to modernise communities and meet sustainability initiatives, helping our clients choose the right solution in order to deliver the best outcomes to the end user.
“Altogether stands out in the market because they genuinely want to do the right thing. Sales can be a pretty tough environment - in other organisations, it can be more about getting the deal at all costs. But at Altogether, everyone lives by our values. We’ve grown quickly, but we’re doing it the right way. We put the customer at the centre of our decisions. Embracing innovation means we take measured risks, but never at the expense of our customers. We pursue the best outcomes for them.”
Travis has been part of the Altogether team for several years, so he’s seen us through plenty of stages of evolution. In this time, the energy team has grown significantly, from a small group to a department of go-getters - yet their team spirit remains just as strong.
“Everyone in the sales team wants to help each other out. We have a collective target, so everyone is pitching in for the good of the team. At the moment, there’s a real drive to grow and be better than the opposition. We’re the fastest-growing embedded network provider across Queensland and NSW, so we’re definitely not afraid to try new things and push boundaries.”
It’s this energy that Travis says is the key differentiator between Altogether and other workplaces, especially for anyone in sales. It’s the best of both worlds - small enough that there’s agility, innovation and a get-up-and-go attitude, but big enough that there’s stability, team support and the resources to make it happen.
“Product development and innovation are regular topics of discussion. We’ve got accountability sessions and targets to achieve, but the energy is really positive. Everyone in the business pushes back on each other to ensure we’re pursuing the best outcomes. We’re not constrained by policies and procedures - if you need something done and it’s in line with our objectives, it gets done.”
Travis has a natural talent for sales and business development, with almost a decade of experience in the energy sector to prove it. But his career journey originated in an entirely different sector. He was a Physical Education teacher for many years, then combined his love of exercise with his interest in sales and business to help grow a national chain of gyms. These days, Travis keeps in touch with his sports roots as President of the Maroochydore Junior AFL Club.
“I like keeping active and spending time with my family, and living near the beach provides a great lifestyle. I’ve never lost my passion for sport and the positive impact it can have on kids and communities.”
As for the future? It’s all looking up for Travis and our sales team.
“I think we’re on the right track. We need to keep recruiting good people to continue to innovate and grow and to keep that forward-looking focus. We’re a good size and in a good place. If you want to work somewhere that never feels too big and stale, this is the place for you.”
