global recycling day

Our single-use products, fast fashion, and throwaway culture are having a massive impact on the planet. But we can all make a difference if we make an effort to be more considerate of what we buy and what we throw away.

The recent collapse of the REDcycle soft plastic recycling program is a great example of why we need to take responsibility ourselves. So, in honor of this day, I wanted to share some simple ways we can all take more responsibility for the waste we produce.

Here are some top tips for using less and recycling more:

  • When buying things, think about your purchases. Do you really need it? Think about the quality and if buying cheap will serve you (or the planet) in the long run. Can you buy a reusable version (eg make up wipes)? Is it important to buy new or could you find it on Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree or a local Op Shop?
  • When getting rid of something, think if someone else could benefit from it. Does it really deserve to go in the bin? Join your local Buy Nothing Facebook Group or place items that can continue being used on the verge outside your home. It’s not likely to be there long!
  • When throwing items out, ask yourself, am I disposing of this item in the right way. Is it recyclable? Could someone else use it? Am I putting it in the correct bin?
  • Don't just chuck organic waste. Many community gardens accept food scraps, or perhaps your local council has a food waste program. If all else fails, start your own compost or worm farm!
  • Invest in a reusable coffee cup. Set rules for yourself around getting take away coffees. I only buy take away coffee if I remember to take my cup. If I forget my cup, I don’t buy a coffee that day.
  • We can all have an impact, so let's make an effort to be more considerate of what we buy and what we throw away.

Happy Global Recycling Day! ♻️🌍
